About the Opportunity

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Landscape Maintenance Worker Supervisor, the successful candidate will be
responsible for maintaining crisp and clean grounds and hardscape on the Boston though the removal of
organic debris and litter. The Landscape Maintenance Worker performs a variety of landscaping projects
including excavating and grading for installation and/or renovation of display beds, natural turf, and
driveway construction. They clean roadways, walkways, and parking areas of debris. Remove trash from
grounds daily to maintain clean appearance and safe campus area.

Landscape Maintenance Workers are permanent members of the NU Snow Team involving the removal
of snow and ice from university and adjoining areas including roadways, walkways, and steps and
parking areas. This includes and is not limited to plowing, shoveling, salting, and sanding using University
snow removal equipment as necessary to maintain safety of pedestrians and vehicles.

Responsible for security of personal equipment, including tools, foul weather gear, boots gloves, etc.
Responsible for the operation of the following equipment: powered sweeper, steam cleaner, bobcat and
dump truck, and all other ground equipment including jack hammer, Air Knife/Spade, rotor tiller and
chain saw. Use various tools and equipment including shovels, pick, broom, rack, and lawnmower, etc.
Detect and report improper operation of facility equipment, defective materials and situations that
require repair to supervisor. Follow prescribed safety rules and regulations. Perform other related duties as required or as directed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Three (3) years of work experience in the field of arboriculture or a related field is required
• including all aspects of landscape installation and maintenance required.
• Thorough knowledge of turf maintenance techniques required. Some experience in the construction and care of hardscape systems required.
• Must be able to properly operate a variety of equipment and tools as described above in “Responsibilities.”
• Must be quality-focused and able to communicate effectively with peers and customers, clearly and professionally as well as the ability to follow directions and interact with a variety of people required.
• Must have and maintain a valid U.S. State of Residence driver’s license and U.S. D.O.T. Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator’s License within three (3) months of employment.
• Must possess and maintain a Massachusetts Office of Public Safety and Inspections (OPSI) 2A and 1C hoisting licenses within six (6) months of employment.
• Must be able to perform strenuous manual labor, including frequent lifting/carrying/transporting loads up to 50 lbs.
• Required to work in all weather conditions in all seasons and essential staff for weather related emergencies impacting the grounds.
• Must be able to work overtime during and weekends when needed.

About the Opportunity

Under the direction of the Associate Director, Horticulture & Grounds, the Horticulturist will perform a variety of duties to maintain the herbaceous and woody layers of the Northeastern Arboretum, on the Boston campus such as:

• Systematically pruning, mulching, weeding, watering, root invigoration/soil remediation and pest management as part of the overall plant health care program for the living landscape. • Performing specialty tasks such as ball-and-burlap landscape installations (plantscapes, hardscapes, or irrigation).

The Horticulturist is responsible for the general daily maintenance and proper use of the equipment and materials supplied by the University such as: cold weather clothing, trucks, hoisting machinery, power tools, hand tools, etc. Additionally, the Horticulturist maintains the daily activity/work log for the horticulture crew. The Horticulturist is considered essential personnel and a permanent member of the NU Snow Team which involves the removal of snow and ice from the university and adjoining areas including roadways, walkways, steps, and parking areas by plowing, shoveling, applying salt and sand using University snow removal equipment as necessary to maintain safety of pedestrians and vehicles. This position has the added responsibility of helping to educate other staff, faculty, students and the public on horticulture and plant care. This position at times requires paid voluntary work on outward reach efforts with the surrounding Boston community supporting the Northeastern University Arboretum’s mission. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Suitable candidates will have a minimum of 7 years of related work experience within the green industry of landscaping, horticulture, gardening, arboriculture, or a closely related field. In lieu of this work experience:

• Candidates possessing an associate degree will require 5 years of field-related experience.
